Dwindling days on Xanga?

With me starting up the new job in a week and a half, I don't know what my 'net presence in this spot will be. In theory, the new paper is super-strict with its "non-work" internet policy. Thus, I might not be online here much, if ever. I'll be done in M-town after tomorrow's playoff WIN!!! Then, it's a week to move junk up to Rams territory, then brace for basketball and wrestling.

If any of y'all who don't have my e-mail or cell # would like it before I depart, zip me a message at the bottom of this post in the next day or so. I'll be in and out of the office for a couple days getting my last stuff done and training the new hire before I scram.

I must brag. I correctly identified my most recent subscriber, JES, without any full hints of an identity on her blog. HU JOURNALISTS ROCK!!! (so do the broadcast folks!)

Something halfways intelligent on leadership

What's up with the way leaders and scandals are handled? I'm specifically thinking of the Ted Haggard resignation as head honcho of the NAE earlier today/yesterday. I'm caught on several different thoughts on these things.

Leaders are supposed to be held to higher standards than everybody else, so punishment for misconduct ought to be a bit harsher. Thus, if some leader (church or otherwise) makes a big mistake (i.e. Mark Foley, church sexual abuse stuff), I'm in favor of harsh punishments.

However, punishment ought not know political boundaries. I don't care if its George Ryan or Rod Blagojevich who did something illegal. If they both did something really dumb, lock 'em both up and keep election year politics out of it.

On the other hand, where does punishment meet reconcilliation? The world definitely is out for the kill, so every error (assumed or actual) gets somebody canned. However, I understand the Christian reprimand to involve a punishment (however harsh) that still keeps a relationship intact (to correct error and make reparitions).

What's with the nature of every assumed wrongdoing to involve resignation of one's position? If Haggard IS guilty of whatever, sure, he ought to resign and do counseling or whatever. However, if he's just the victim of a smear campaign, why give in? If you're innocent, what's the deal?

Also, why do allegations = guilt? An allegation is just that. Yes, the human mind automatically diminishes one's character for such, but it shouldn't make an overarching judgement until proven guilty. Mike, what's the psychology behind this phenomena? I note how allegations, however untrue, are as (or more) damaging than legit accusations.

Early morning randomness — I see I've got a random HU student (journalism major, if I deduce from said person's site) who signed up for my blog. . . . legendary Centralia Holliday Hoops tourney in December HERE I COME!!!!!

MDR in good hands

I met my replacement last night. SHE ROCKS!!!! The MDR sports is going to get a lot better in my absence. The replacement has a few years of journalism under her belt and definitely has an eye for media I don't have yet. Granted, I'm bound to get better over time, and all the more if I find sharp journalists to work with. Go figure, she's living in MV for a while, too.

Man, the MHS-MV games are going to be fun (: With me up there, MVTHS will be covered by 2 former MDR reporters. Hmm, the Cats might get a little extra love from the MV papers, heeheehee. Plus, that means three papers working together to help each other out when our schools play each other.

Packin up

So, it looks like I'll be out of M-town next week. That means two Sundays left of jamming with my awesome musical gang

My last athletic event: Another Wildcats FB WINNER. Triad's goin' DOWN! The Cats haven't lost a game under my watch this year (I wasn't at their lone loss) and I expect that trend to continue one more week. Heck, I'd try to do the roadie for round 3 if work allows it. See? My conference loyalties haven't died . . . yet (:

Got my new apartment lined up, so now it's a matter of getting the lease signed and cash down before I grab a few extra muscles and head on north. Can't say the new place is in the greatest location (a block from the railroad tracks), but it's the only one big enough for my stuff. It does have a TON of storage space, including a sliding-door closet I might try to turn into a giant picture box-thingy if I don't need the space. Plus, I want to be able to use my pad as a social gathering place for amigos once in a while. The new place has a living/dining room designed well for that sort of thing. May the Lord fill it with many hours of visits from blessed people.

Definitely don't want to leave my homies here, but at least I'm just a quick trip away. I'm counting on that much to get me through the first few months of my transition. Definitely NOT looking forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas away from the family. I dreaded those weekends even before I thought about moving. Those times are the BIG family things for my amazingly cool relatives. Nothing like Thanksgiving weekend and Blueboys football at state followed by the annual get-together at my aunt and uncle's place with all the cousins. Then, there's the Christmas Eve family traditions. That usually means hammettes (lots of prep work by mom, but DELICIOUS!), homemade mashed potatoes and slaw for dinner before Christmas Eve church stuff. Gifts would be given/attacked after church. In the morning, we'd all leave the living room while "Santa," er, Mom, would stuff the stockings on the mantle. At least my folks and bro will come down sometime during the studly kid's Christmas break and maybe do the family thing in my new place. Better make mom cook, heeheehee.

Yeah, my first Christmas in ages without a fireplace mantle in my pad. Sad day.

Ugh, I'm homesick just thinking about this stuff. Might as well post the best lyrics I know to combat such feelings. Thanks a bunch, Rich Mullins ("If I Stand"):

So if I stand let me stand on the promise
That you will pull me through
And if I can't, let me fall on the grace
That first brought me to You
And if I sing let me sing for the joy
That has born in me these songs
And if I weep let it be as a man
Who is longing for his home

Fun Weekend

No, y'all, I haven't moved . . . yet, though that day better be close at hand (for the wallet, not my heart). I just had a totally fun wedding back home.

Line of the weekend: The best man's reception toast (Jeremy speaking about another Jeremy): "Two Jeremys don't make a right." (catch the Relent K reference?).

Great wedding for my best friend from high school. It was an absolute honor to participate in celebrating the second-most important event of his life. The day went off with only a couple insignificant glitches that will get good laughs on the ceremony video. I consider it a great privilege to have been one of the groomsmen who shouldered a chunk of the load in making mi amigo and his wife shine like stars on their day.

Plus, there was all the fun hanging out with guys I hadn't seen since New Year's Eve. Praise the Lord for friends who can be split around IL and IN and still come together as if we'd never been apart.

Many props to the photographer. She rocked! She had some really clever shots set up (probably with my buddy's suggestions) that will look super cool, like Mafia-esque groomsmen in shades walking across the highway by the church, and the totally "cool dudes" look with the shades. I would love to get good enough with photography to shoot events like that on my free time.

As for the move, the paper guys here pretty much set next week's FB game as my last day. That means I'd better have a new pad ready to move into by next week. I can't go long without the cash, though a few legit days off would be nice. M-town already hired my replacement, which is great for them since the went 9+ months without a reporter before I came.

GO WILDCATS!!!
